Tensions are mounting between China and Canada over Beijing's alleged role in a cyberattack at a Canadian science and technology agency, just as the two countries were looking to smooth relations and organize a bilateral get-together.

On Tuesday, Canada singled out China for blame over an alleged cyberattack at the National Research Council, a federal agency that conducts research and development into technology for eventual commercial use. China initially called the allegations "groundless" in a statement issued by the Chinese embassy in Ottawa, describing Canada's behavior as "neither professional nor responsible."
