Dr. Nelson Sewankambo is the director of the Africa Initiative, a joint project between CIGI and Makerere University to contribute to Africa’s capacity and knowledge in conflict resolution, energy, food security, health, and migration, with special attention to the cross-cutting issue of climate change. Nelson is also principal of the medical school at Makerere University in Uganda, and is involved in research projects dealing with infectious diseases, health care training and delivery.

In addition to his role as dean, Nelson is the chair of ISHReCA (Initiatives for Strengthening Health Research Capacity in Africa), co-director of the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, vice president of Accordia Global Health Foundation and professor of Internal Medicine at Makerere University.
In 2007, Nelson received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa from McMaster University, and in 2006, he was awarded a fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians (FCRP), London. He also holds an M.B.Ch.B in medicine and an M.Med in internal medicine from Makerere University, and an M.Sc. in clinical epidemiology from McMaster University.
