Gregory Chin has experience as a practitioner in policy planning and implementation of foreign policy, and academic training on the study of China, Asia and global affairs. His research focuses on the political economy of China, Asia and global governance. A faculty member at York University (Canada), he joined CIGI in 2007 as a senior fellow, and in 2011 was acting director of the Global Development Program and chair of the China Research Group.
Gregory Chin has a thorough knowledge of China’s expansion within the global economy and Asian regionalism. He obtained his Ph.D. in political science from York University, and has been a visiting fellow at Peking University and the University of Cambridge. Before joining CIGI, he was First Secretary (Development) in the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, where he managed the design and delivery of Canada’s development assistance programs for China and North Korea. At CIDA headquarters, he was a senior program manager on the China and Northeast Asia Program.
Before joining CIDA, he was a Senior International Affairs Analyst and Trade Commissioner in the China and Mongolia Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. At DFAIT, he was on the core team that organized the Prime Minister’s 2001 Team Canada mission to China and Hong Kong. He served on the interdepartmental working group for China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, and the Privy Council Office’s interdepartmental China analysis group.
He sees CIGI as playing a unique bridging role between policymakers and researchers. His early work as a CIGI senior fellow included research on China’s economic diplomacy, the economic statecraft of the emerging powers, and international currency challenges. His present research for CIGI includes China and BRICS involvement in the G20 and global financial and development reforms. In 2011, he led CIGI’s Global Development Program and China Research Group, focusing on strategic planning and implementation of the research programs.
In addition to his work at CIGI and faculty position at York University, he is an associate fellow of Chatham House (UK). He is a member of the editorial board of the China and International Organization Books Series, co-published by Shanghai People’s Publishing House and Shanghai International Studies University. He sits on the advisory board of the North Korea Research Group at the University of Toronto. He has been a consultant to CIDA and the International Research Development Centre. He is currently involved in a program on regional economic cooperation with the Asian Development Bank.
