A Blueprint for the Energy Partnership of the Americas
Introduction/Background
The purpose of this project was the development of a blueprint for an Energy Partnership for the Americas that would go beyond bilateral agreements and adopt a regional approach towards sustainable growth and clean energy. The blueprint document explored and defined pathways for delivering solutions to many issues, including:
- the appropriate energy mix for the different countries in the Western hemisphere;
- the infrastructure and technology necessary to boost output and delivery;
- the particulars of the public-private alliances and interactions needed to fulfill the integration objectives;
- the challenges of addressing the environmental agenda while delivering economic development alongside greater energy production; and
- the role of domestic agencies and international institutions in the governance of the many aspects of a formalized partnership.
Project Activities
The project team includes the current and future market-oriented energy leaders of the hemisphere: Canada, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US. A blueprint document that presents a way forward for the energy partnership was provided to the presidents of the 34 countries of the Americas (and/or their foreign ministers) at the Summit of the Americas which took place in Trinidad and Tobago in April 2009.
