Multiple Multilateralisms

PROJECT AIMS

The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) will be holding its 24th annual meeting in Waterloo, Ontario from June 2-4, 2011. Sponsored by CIGI, the event theme is "Multiple Multilateralisms," and will feature a call for papers, keynote speakers, workshops and plenary sessions/roundtables.

The discussions that occur during the 3 days will generate innovative ideas on the influence and role of the United Nations within an increasingly complex global system of various actors, norms, principles, and issues. Those who are interested in attending, or watching the June 4 sessions at CIGI via webcast, must register by visiting www.acuns.org.

BACKGROUND

ACUNS was founded in 1987 at Dartmouth College and has been hosted at Brown University, Yale University. In 2003, it was relocated to Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. ACUNS brings together professional scholars, teachers, practitioners, as well as educational and research institutions in the field of global governance. It "stimulates, supports, and disseminates research and analysis on the United Nations, multilateralism, and international organization." With complementary mandates and existing collaborations, two of ACUNS's annual meeting plenary sessions/roundtables will be held at CIGI.

ACTIVITIES

Multilateralism has existed and evolved over centuries. As different actors and issues emerge, the system in which the United Nations operates is fluid and complex. ACUNS, with sponsorship from CIGI, The Stanley Foundation and Wilfrid Laurier University, has issued a call for proposals. Current ACUNS members in good standing as well as non-members are encouraged to submit a 250 word abstract, with contact information and professional affiliation, to the ACUNS Secretariat. They are also welcome to propose roundtables and full panel discussions.
