CIGI forms partnership with
Institute for New Economic Thinking
|

In January, CIGI announced a partnership agreement with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). Activities these organizations will participate in include a call for research grant proposals and the April "Crisis and Renewal Conference," which runs April 8 to 11 in Bretton Woods, N.H. CIGI Chair and founder Jim Balsillie, Executive Director Thomas A. Bernes, Distinguished Fellow Paul Jenkins, and CIGI Chair Thomas Homer-Dixon are moderators or panellists for four conference sessions. Also representing CIGI is a delegation of 13 students from five Canadian universities.

Challenges and Opportunities for the French Presidency: The G20 � 2011 and Beyond |
|
CIGI co-hosted a series of meetings in Paris from November 29 to December 1, 2010, to consider the fundamental issues facing the G20. This report, which includes a summary of the meetings by Deanne Leifso, papers by CIGI experts (Colin Bradford, Barry Carin, Paul Jenkins and Gordon Smith) and three Issues Notes from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, previews tasks for the French G20 presidency and considers the immediate and legacy challenges the G20 faces.

G20 Agenda and Process: Analysis and Insight by CIGI Experts

CIGI continues to give a prominent place to G20 analysis in its research, conferences and publications. The G20 Agenda and Process: Analysis and Insight by CIGI Experts is a compilation of 21 commentaries on policy and governance issues under discussion in 2010 that are still relevant to the ongoing G20 agenda under the French presidency and the forum's aspirations for the future.

NPGL Soundings Series: Summitry and Public Perceptions |

Published online as the NPGL Soundings series, this publication brings together the commentaries from the London G20 Summit in April 2009, the L'Aquila G8 Summit in July 2009, the Pittsburgh G20 Summit in September 2009, the Muskoka G8 Summit and Toronto G20 Summit in June 2010, and the Seoul G20 Summit in November 2010. The Soundings series provides a substantial body of factual and interpretive insights on the relationship between leaders, the media and the public.

CIGI goes to ISA
|
|
More than a dozen CIGI fellows and CIGI chairs, as well as staff, attended ISA (with a conference theme in 2011 of "Global Governance: Political Authority in Transition"), with some CIGI personnel appearing on panels to discuss a wide variety of issues in international affairs. At the CIGI booth, various new CIGI publications were available, including "Challenges and Opportunities for the French Presidency: The G20- 2011 and Beyond," a conference report and background papers from CIGI's G20 Working Group. About 5,000 participants attended the conference, including thousands of university professors and graduate students in international relations courses across North America.

Japan nuclear crisis: CIGI perspective
|
|
The current nuclear crisis in Japan makes the conclusions and recommendations on global nuclear safety offered by CIGI more relevant than ever. CIGI's Nuclear Energy Futures project concluded in 2010 that "Since the 1986 Chernobyl accident, nuclear safety has improved worldwide as measured by key indicators. But continuing incidents even in well-regulated countries are worrying; a safety culture is still not universally apparent; complacency is a constant concern; and international sharing of lessons learned from operational experience and incidents is still inadequate."

The online knowledge resource, which became active November 25, 2010, offers open access to a suite of features aimed to equip users with research and information on Africa's current policy issues. Within 105 days, the Africa Portal was visited by people in 156 of the world's 194 countries.

CIGI launches "Post-2015 Development" project with IFRC
|
|
A partnered initiative between CIGI and the IFRC, "Toward a Post-2015 Development Paradigm" aims to provoke critical examinations of, and generate policy options on, the future governance paradigms in international development. Co-directed by Senior Fellow Barry Carin, the project will launch a broad but high-level discussion to shape international policy approaches following the conclusion of the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2015. The first meeting of this project took place on February 14-15, 2011, in Switzerland.

Economics and econometrics of financial crises - call for proposals
A joint event and project sponsored by CIGI, The Viessmann European Research Centre and The University of Tasmania's School of Economics and Finance, "The Economics and Econometrics of Recurring Financial Market Crises" aims to generate serious discussion and policy options on models of financial markets and economic policies dealing with financial crises. Academics, policy makers and students are encouraged to submit paper proposals for discussion by April 30, 2011. The project partners will then select papers, assemble a group of experts and convene a meeting at the CIGI Campus from October 3-4. For more information, click here.
ACUNS annual meeting in Waterloo

The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) is now accepting workshop paper and panel proposals for presentation at its 24th Annual Meeting, to be held in Waterloo, Ontario June 2-4, 2011. Sponsored by CIGI, as well as the Stanley Foundation, the event theme is "Multiple Multilateralisms," and will feature a call for papers, keynote speakers, workshops and plenary sessions/roundtables.
