CIGI announces International Law Research Program to launch in Waterloo in 2014

CIGI has announced the launch of a 10-year, $60 million multidisciplinary research program focused on developing world-class intellectual strength in international law. The CIGI International Law Research Program will provide leading academics, graduate students and legal experts from Canada and abroad with the opportunity to contribute to advancements in international law. Research planning and related activities are expected to commence in early 2014, with full activity to get underway later in the year.

CIGI panel on 'strategic vision' presented at 8th annual Internet Governance Forum in Bali

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) forum brings together all stakeholders in the Internet governance debate. In October, at the 8th annual IGF meeting in Bali, Indonesia, CIGI experts organized and participated in a workshop panel entitled, "Developing a Strategic Vision for Internet Governance."

Workshop in Yellowknife considers challenges and obstacles to Arctic development

In November, CIGI Senior Fellow John Higginbotham convened a policy workshop in Yellowknife. Participants considered Arctic marine transportation challenges and Canadian, regional and international governance frameworks through which maritime interests will have to be pursued, given the warming of the Arctic ocean.

CIGI fellows present new approaches to handling severe sovereign crises, to IMF, European and US scholars and policy makers

Senior Fellows Richard Gitlin, Brett House and Susan Schadler have been promoting their respective projects on sovereign debt, to International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials and policy makers and scholars. Throughout the fall, the three held presentations at Brookings Institution and the German Marshall Fund US in Washington, Breugel in Brussels, Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Information Internationales in Paris, and the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group. 

Latest paper in Internet governance series explores securitization of cyberspace

In "Bounding Cyber Power: Escalation and Restraint in Global Cyberspace," Ronald J. Deibert examines both the forces that contribute to international cyberspace conflict and alternative methods to preserve the openness and security of the Internet. His paper is the sixth in the CIGI series of Internet Governance Papers.

CIGI appoints Melissa Hathaway as distinguished fellow to contribute to Global Security project on Internet governance

CIGI is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Internet governance and cyber security expert Melissa Hathaway as distinguished fellow. Hathaway will contribute to CIGI's Global Security program and research on Internet governance. CIGI's "Organized Chaos: Reimagining the Internet" project aims to play a constructive role in creating strategies for states committed to multi-stakeholder models of Internet governance.

Bill Graham appointed as senior fellow, bringing new expertise on Internet governance and policy

CIGI is pleased to announce the appointment of Internet governance expert Bill Graham as senior fellow. Along with recently appointed Melissa Hathaway, Graham will contribute to CIGI's Global Security research on Internet governance and join CIGI's "Organized Chaos: Reimagining the Internet" project.

Canadian journalist John Ibbitson appointed to one-year senior fellowship at CIGI

CIGI is pleased to announce the appointment of award-winning Canadian writer and journalist John Ibbitson as a senior fellow, effective January 2014. In his one-year fellowship at CIGI, Ibbitson will research, write and speak publicly on issues related to Canada's foreign policy and the country's role in current global affairs, including the global economy and global security.

At a CIGI Global Policy Forum at Ottawa's Rideau Club, Amar Bhattacharya, Director of the G-24 Secretariat on International Monetary Affairs and Development, assessed the role of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and whether or not a BRICS development bank is needed.

Waterloo Region Students 'time travel' at CIGI Global Youth Forum

One hundred-fifty high school students from the Waterloo Region were teleported through time to learn about peace and global security on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. At the CIGI Global Youth Forum (presented by CIGI and the BSIA), students participated in hands-on crisis simulations, art exhibits and historical film analysis as part of the forum.

CIGI-sponsored researchers release paper on Markov switching approach to investors' herding behaviour

Martin T. Bohl, Arne C. Klein, and CIGI Senior Fellow Pierre Siklos released the latest paper from their CIGI-sponsored Essays in Financial Governance project. The paper, A Markov Switching Approach to Herding, illustrates the drawbacks in existing models of market herding and proposes a new herding model that is able to link variations in herding behaviour to proxies for sentiment or the macroeconomic environment, by means of time-varying transition probabilities.
