27 November 2018 (Waterloo, Ontario) - As G20 leaders arrive in Buenos Aires, a cohort of G20 experts from the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a leading think tank, are available for commentary, analysis and background from Argentina and abroad. Expertise includes: China and US trade relations, the Middle East (Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman), international trade, monetary policy, international relations and sustainable development. Biographies listed below.

Thomas A. Bernes, CIGI distinguished fellow (Buenos Aires, Argentina)-English

Tom has served as Canada’s alternate governor at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. He has been the executive director of the IMF for Canada, Ireland and several Caribbean countries.

Expertise: G20, international trade

Bessma Momani, CIGI senior fellow (Waterloo, Canada)-English

Bessma Momani is an expert in Middle Eastern economics and foreign policy as well as the IMF. In addition to her work at CIGI she is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo and the Balsillie School of International Affairs.

Expertise: The Middle East, IMF, foreign policy, oil prices

Hector Torres, CIGI senior fellow (Buenos Aires, Argentina)-English/Spanish

Hector is a former executive director at the IMF and previously served on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Task Force on Financial Crisis as well as the coordinator of Technical Cooperation for Latin America and the Caribbean. Hector’s research is on global governance reform, the G20 and WTO ministerial.

Dan Ciuriak, CIGI senior fellow (Ottawa, Canada)-English

Dan is an expert in international trade and innovation. He is a former deputy chief economist at Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) (now Global Affairs Canada) and deputy to the chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Committee.

Expertise: Digital trade, USMCA, international trade, intellectual property rights

Patrick Leblond, CIGI senior fellow (Ottawa, Canada)-English/French

Patrick is an expert in global economic governance and international political economy, financial regulation, and business and public policy. Patrick specializes in the investigation of international trade including the USMCA, CETA and the ongoing US and China trade disputes.

Kevin Carmichael, CIGI senior fellow (Montreal, Canada)-English

Kevin is a national business columnist for Canada’s National Post. He led coverage on the global financial crisis and has covered the Federal Reserve and US economy and politics.

Expertise: US economy, central banking, global financial crisis

Robert McDougall, CIGI senior fellow (Paris, France)-English

Robert is an expert on international trade cooperation, multilateral governance, China and the WTO, digital trade and dispute settlement. Robert spent 15 years as an international trade lawyer at Global Affairs Canada.

Expertise: Sustainable development, dispute settlement, digital trade, international trade

Miranda Xafa, CIGI senior fellow (Athens, Greece)-English/Greek
Miranda is a leader in euro-zone economics and finance, sovereign debt crises and the IMF. She served as a member of the executive board of the IMF and was chief economic advisor to Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis.

Expertise: Euro-zone economics and finances, sovereign debt

Rohinton P. Medhora, CIGI president (Waterloo, Ontario)-English

Rohinton is president of CIGI. He is a member of the Commission on Global Economic Transformation and serves on the boards of the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research.

Expertise: Monetary and trade policy, digital economy, international economic relations
