CIGI has an opening for a Controller. Reporting to the CFO and Director of Operations, this position is responsible for a wide range of accounting and financial processes for CIGI. The Controller will work closely with the management team to provide meaningful, timely and accurate financial reporting while ensuring excellent stewardship of the organization’s assets. This position has one direct report.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with excellent attention to details and the ability to build relationships across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, monitor and backup all accounting functions including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, including HST.
  • Produce accurate internal and external reporting for decision making to all levels of the organization and various external stakeholders. Assist with various financial reports for presentation to Finance Committee and full Board of Directors. Respond to ad-hoc financial requests.
  • Assist with creation of annual budget and project budgets.
  • Cash management, including monitoring of CIGI’s cash flow (Canadian and US account) along with recommendations for withdrawals from various funds ensuring that money is only taken when necessary but avoiding the use of overdraft facility.
  • Co-ordinate and manage field work of external audit as well as ad hoc audits by granting institutions, governments, etc.
  • Monthly investment reconciliations along with recording investment revenue and fees in the general ledger.
  • Maintain overall integrity of the general ledger.
  • Prepare complete and accurate government filings eg. HST, EHT, CPP, EI, WSIB.
  • Establish and manage financial policies and procedures to be followed throughout the organization.
  • Active participation in the management team. Establish positive, collaborative relationships across the organization.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • University degree, CPA at least 8 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, experience working with not-for-profits.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
  • Strong strategic focus, with a demonstrated aptitude for continuous learning and innovative thinking.
  • Strong communication skills with stakeholders at all levels, and ability to resolve complex financial and project-related issues.
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Understanding of international affairs and academic or government work environment an asset.
