Events and Community Relations Manager

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a global think tank based in Waterloo, Canada, is seeking an Events and Community Relations Manager to coordinate a variety of events and programs that enhance the organization's public profile and increase targeted stakeholder engagement. Events range from public lectures, receptions, and private meetings to large-scale events such as multi-day conferences globally.

The position supervises one or two staff and is responsible for the end-to-end process of event planning and execution, including scheduling, registration, budgeting, program management, food and beverage, audio-visual, on-site and virtual event execution, and relationship management.

CIGI is looking for an ambitious individual with strong leadership abilities, impeccable organizational skills, and proven event planning experience. Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, the Manager will work closely with the Research and Executive offices to deliver strategic events that connect CIGI’s research with policy makers and influencers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and execute a diverse range of impactful virtual and in-person events to drive engagement with target audiences in accordance with CIGI’s research objectives
  • Supervise events staff and volunteers, including advising, mentoring, and setting priorities
  • Develop and implement events and community relations strategies to enhance relationships with a variety of critical stakeholders including but not limited to all levels of government, partner institutions, CIGI fellows and other actors in policy making (the “community”)
  • Oversee all aspects of venue rental to 3rd parties on the CIGI Campus
  • Collaborate on digital production elements to help deliver creative, engaging, and contemporary experiences
  • Guide the technical execution and production of various virtual platforms utilized for events
  • Advise internal project stakeholders on the outreach of public events at CIGI Campus
  • Engage directly with the public at CIGI Campus events to educate and inform communities about CIGI’s role and research, including hosting where applicable
  • Set benchmarks and key performance indicators for the events team to measure, monitor and evaluate effectiveness
  • Ensure the CIGI’s contacts database accurately reflects CIGI’s community and event stakeholders
  • Cultivate key, local community relationships
  • Represent CIGI in the community to broaden understanding of the organization’s work
  • Other duties as assigned by the Public Affairs Director

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, and experience in, community-building and engagement ladder concepts and methodologies to lead and drive the development and delivery of strategic events and community relations plans and related activities
  • Expertise in both virtual and live event best practices, including event platforms and presentation tools
  • Ability to assess and evaluate event opportunities as they arise and collaborate with partners and internal teams to enhance event impact
  • Experience in coordination of audio-visual productions and digital creative assets
  • Creative thinker who is adept at working on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and comfortable adding new ideas for different event types
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a global mindset, or ability to connect with people from other cultures, languages, and contexts
  • Detail oriented with strong program management skills, balanced with the ability to think strategically
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Aptitude to excel under pressure, make decisions, solve problems, and meet deadlines
  • Interest, and experience collaborating with, community groups and organizations
  • Flexible when faced with changing priorities and deadlines
  • Metrics driven with demonstrated analytical skills
  • Excellent budget and financial management skills
  • Working knowledge of CRM systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years in a role leading events, including a minimum of 2 years’ experience with virtual events
  • 3+ years’ experience managing a team to proven results
  • Related post-secondary degree (public relations, communications, marketing, event management) with a CMP certification preferred
  • Knowledge of international relations issues and/or background in political science
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as necessary
  • The candidate must be based in the Waterloo Region or willing to relocate
