Research Associate

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank whose research and analysis influence policy makers to innovate. Our global network of multidisciplinary researchers and strategic partnerships provide policy solutions for the digital era.

Reporting to the President, the Research Associate contributes to the planning and execution of CIGI’s research projects by providing research, analysis and general support.

This position is a based at CIGI’s Waterloo office where employees have a hybrid work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research and Analysis

  • Researches, evaluates, and synthesizes complex information and data from an array of printed and digital sources to answer complex research inquiries.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging research and public policy issues as it relates to CIGI’s strategic plan, in addition to on-going awareness of developments as it applies to the work of related Think Tanks.
  • Assists in the preparation of concept notes, briefing materials, strategic/competitor analyses, reports, talking points, presentations and conference resources on various topics as assigned.
  • Provides analytical reviews and summaries of existing literature pertinent to specific projects. For example, may coordinate all aspects of literature review processes including literature searching, retrieval, selection, summarizing and dissemination of material from sources such as electronic databases, libraries, and government publications.
  • Responsible for completing a varying number of longer-term research projects as well as responding to quick-turnaround information requests.
  • Contributes to proposals and grant applications for funding as assigned.
  • Provides research support across departmental lines and for external fellows, upon request.
  • Builds and manages coherent spread sheets and databases, merges data from multiple sources and formats, and creates information visualizations representing results of research and analyses.

Project Coordination and Support

  • Assists in the coordination of projects as part of a project team -from planning, implementation, tracking internal and external deadlines, and using project tools and methods to determine and communicate project status and progress.
  • Contributes to project documentation and stakeholder engagement tracking to improve research processes, deliverables, and strategic communication of CIGI’s research.
  • Provides general administrative support as required.

Information Management

  • Manages electronic research databases and files and finds ways to improve content management process and applications.
  • Supports data management activities including data prep, monitoring, cleansing, migration/imports and error prevention.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Completion of a master’s degree in public policy, economics, international relations, information/digital management or relevant field.
  • Ability to understand and mobilize research questions into a comprehensive search strategy for peer-reviewed literature, grey literature, and website content.
  • Strong knowledge of primary and secondary research methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of research databases and experience with tools and strategies for searching these databases, organizing voluminous search results, and integrating results with data from other sources.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and under minimal supervision, to accept responsibility and to respond with calm and confidence to complex and evolving problems.
  • Advanced oral and written skills, particularly the ability to present and explain complex concepts to a wide variety of audiences, one-on-one, in small groups, etc.
  • Highly developed skills and creativity in information research, organization, presentation, and delivery; excellent critical thinking skills; ability to learn; exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of applications and tools to manage information and ensure reliability and appropriateness of information upon which strategic decisions are made.
  • Excellent aptitude for organizing and prioritizing.
  • Strong sense of teamwork with diverse collaborators and high professionalism.
  • Proficient in standard software applications.
  • Adaptive and flexible.
