Marcelo de Paiva Abreu earned his doctorate in economics from Cambridge University. He is a special expert in integration and trade at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC.

He was formerly a professor at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where he began teaching in 1984. He was chair of the economics department from 1990 to 1997, and received a National Scientific and Technological Research Scholarship. Since 1995, he has written regularly for O Estado de São Paulo, a major Brazilian newspaper.
