CIGI '10: Climate of Action
to explore road to global deal
 
From October 1-3, CIGI has dedicated its annual conference to exploring how action, across all levels of government and society, could be mobilized and coordinated to generate near-term progress toward an effective and equitable global framework on climate. The conference at CIGI's headquarters in Waterloo includes a public event on Friday evening and private round tables on Saturday and Sunday.

The G20 Seoul International Symposium, September 28-29, co-hosted by the Korea Development Institute, the Brookings Institution and the Dong-A Ilbo, will focus on the future of G20 summits.  The Symposium builds off of the findings of a CIGI-Brookings-KDI conference held at Brookings in Washington, D.C. in April.  CIGI’s Acting Executive Director, Tom Bernes, along with CIGI Distinguished and Senior Fellows will play significant roles at the Seoul G20 Symposium. New project to examine the IAEA
 
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the paramount instrument of global governance in the nuclear realm, in three areas of concern: nuclear safety, nuclear security and nuclear nonproliferation. All aspects of the IAEA are being examined in a two-year project, undertaken by two partners, CIGI and The Canadian Centre for Treaty Compliance (CCTC), at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA), Carleton University in Ottawa. Directed by Dr. Trevor Findlay, CIGI Senior Fellow and Director of the CCTC, The Strengthening and Reform of the International Atomic Energy Agency project seeks to capitalize on the success of the Nuclear Energy Futures (NEF) project by advancing ideas contained in the project’s report, The Future of Nuclear Energy to 2030 and its Implications for Global Governance. Fellow Appointments
Paul Jenkins joins CIGI
as a Distinguished Fellow
 
CIGI has appointed Paul Jenkins as a Distinguished Fellow. Jenkins was previously Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. He was the Bank's Chief Operating Officer and, along with the Governor, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank. At CIGI, he will provide strategic advice on the international economy work program and broader macroeconomic issues. Read more
 
Paul Blustein joins CIGI
as a Senior Visiting Fellow 
 
CIGI has appointed Paul Blustein as a Senior Visiting Fellow. Blustein is a journalist whose 30-year career has been devoted mainly to writing about economic subjects, especially concerning international issues and institutions. A former reporter with the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, he is also the author of multiple books. His work at CIGI at will focus on the role of international institutions in the global economic crisis. Read more

Exchange students arrive
The Africa Initiative exchange program welcomes the 2010 fall cohort of graduate students from Makerere University (Uganda). The students will spend the academic semester in Canada attending classes and conducting research at Wilfrid Laurier University/University of Waterloo—while benefiting from close ties with CIGI. Balsillie Campus rising

 

The Balsillie Campus in Waterloo, Ontario, is a $50-million construction project with a completion date in the summer of 2011. It will create a hub of Canadian-based study and research in international affairs.
The campus will include the already established Balsillie School of International Affairs. Other elements may include a proposed masters program in international law, a proposed school of global trade and innovation and the Morrison Centre for research and studies in peace and conflict, currently in the planning stage.
