CIGI Welcomes New Members to the Board of Directors

CIGI's Board of Directors met on June 28 to take stock and look to the future. The Board, which provides intellectual guidance to CIGI on its research activities, welcomed two new members at the meeting. Vincent Rigby, Assistant Deputy Minister for Strategic Policy at Global Affairs Canada joined the CIGI Board as the Foreign Minister’s designate. Arif Lalani, Vincent’s predecessor on the CIGI Board, was welcomed in his new capacity as Head of the Diplomatic Department for His Highness the Aga Khan, at the Seat of the Ismaili Imamat being established in Lisbon, Portugal. The Board and Executive Leadership at CIGI also thanked Ngaire Woods for her valued insights and contributions as she left the Board.

International Law Research Program Welcomes New Deputy Director of Economic Law Markus Gehring

CIGI's International Law Research Program (ILRP) is pleased to welcome Markus Gehring as deputy director of the program's international economic law stream. Prior to joining CIGI, Markus was Deputy Director of the Centre of European Legal Studies and a university lecturer and Fellow in Law at the University Cambridge, the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable Development Law at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law and an International Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law at the University of Chile.

CIGI Experts Provide South China Sea Ruling Analysis

The recent arbitration tribunal’s ruling in favour of the Philippines in its case against China over maritime claims in the South China Sea represents a milestone in international law and politics. CIGI Senior Fellow David Welch and CIGI Senior Research Associate Benoit Hardy-Chartrand provided expert analysis leading up to the ruling and in the aftermath. Blogging for CIGI's Asia-Pacific Security blog, Welch looked at the ruling from the G7/G20 perspective and assessed China's negotiation policy leading up to the decision. From op-eds in iPolitics and the National Post to expert commentary in the Washington Post and on CBC Morning, Welch and Hardy-Chartrand led South China Sea analysis in Canada.

On Green Banking and China's Sustainability Performance

In 2007, the People’s Bank of China established an internationally recognized program on green finance — the Green Credit Policy, which introduced guidelines and regulations for integrating environmental issues into financial decision making. In his latest policy brief, CIGI Senior Fellow Olaf Weber's analysis suggests that the environmental and social performance of Chinese banks improved significantly between 2009 and 2013 because the Green Credit Guidelines require banks to become active with regard to integrating environmental risks into their credit risk assessment procedures.

Taxing Carbon at the Border for a Greener Economy

Many countries, including Canada, are looking into a variety of carbon pricing models. CIGI Post-Doctoral Fellow Maria Panezi's research focuses on an additional measure: border carbon adjustments. A new CIGI animated video explains how a domestic carbon pricing strategy in combination with taxing carbon-intensive products as they cross borders can lead to a greener economy.

CIGI Signature Lecture: Hurdles of International Trade Governance

The first CIGI Signature lecture of the 2016-17 season will feature one of Canada's best-known economic commentators, Jim Stanford, who will explore the economic rationale for beggar-thy-neighbour trade strategies. In his remarks, the Harold Innis Industry Professor in Economics of McMaster University will consider the sorts of governance mechanisms that would be necessary to regulate this dimension of international competition, so that the economic promise of efficiency-enhancing trade might be experienced more genuinely by all parties.
