Thomas A. Bernes

CIGI Distinguished Fellow

Thomas A. Bernes is a CIGI Distinguished Fellow. After a distinguished career in the Canadian public service and at leading international economic institutions, Tom was CIGI’s executive director from 2009 to 2012. He has held high-level positions at the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Government of Canada. He became a distinguished fellow in 2012.

CIGI Senior Fellow

James M. Boughton is a CIGI Senior Fellow. He is a former historian of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a role he held from 1992 to 2012. From 2001 to 2010, he also served as assistant director in the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department at the IMF. At CIGI, James’s research focuses on the evolution of Canada’s role in international governance since the 1940s and the potential for further evolution in the near future.

Kevin Carmichael is a CIGI senior fellow and a national business columnist for The Financial Post. Kevin began his career in journalism reporting with The Canadian Press between 1998 and 2000. He worked at Bloomberg News, first in Ottawa and then in Washington, DC, between 2000 and 2005. While at Bloomberg, he covered the Bank of Canada, the US Treasury and also visited several countries as a member of the Treasury’s press pool. Kevin joined The Globe and Mail in 2008 as the national business correspondent.

CIGI Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Global Security & Politics Program

Fen Hampson is a distinguished fellow and director of the Global Security & Politics program, overseeing the research direction of the program and related activities. Previously, he served as director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and will continue to serve as chancellor’s professor at Carleton University. He is the recipient of various awards and honours and is a frequent contributor to the national and international media.

Xingqiang (Alex) He is a CIGI research fellow. His work focuses on China and global economic governance, the G20, domestic politics in China and their role in China's foreign economic policy making, and Canada-China economic relations.

A former Canadian deputy foreign minister, NATO ambassador and G7/G8 Sherpa, Gordon Smith is a leading expert on the evolution of the G20 and global summitry. Since joining CIGI in 2010 as a distinguished fellow, Gordon has been a key contributor to CIGI’s G20 research activities, events and publications. His current work focuses on the convergence of technology and global affairs.

Beatrice Weder di Mauro is a senior fellow with CIGI’s Global Economy Program. Beatrice has provided high-level policy advice to key financial institutions and European governments in the areas of financial crisis, international capital flows, financial governance and sovereign debt restructuring.
