Thomas A. Bernes

CIGI Distinguished Fellow

Thomas A. Bernes is a CIGI Distinguished Fellow. After a distinguished career in the Canadian public service and at leading international economic institutions, Tom was CIGI’s executive director from 2009 to 2012. He has held high-level positions at the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Government of Canada. He became a distinguished fellow in 2012.

Paul Blustein

CIGI Senior Fellow

Paul Blustein is a CIGI senior fellow. An award-winning journalist and author, he has written extensively about international economics, trade and financial crises. Prior to joining CIGI in 2010, Paul was a journalist-in-residence at the Brookings Institution, a staff writer for The Washington Post and the chief economic correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. Paul recently released his fifth book, Laid Low: Inside the Crisis That Overwhelmed Europe and the IMF, and he is currently working on a book about China and the global trading system, which will be published by CIGI in early 2019.

James M. Boughton

CIGI Senior Fellow

James M. Boughton is a CIGI Senior Fellow. He is a former historian of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a role he held from 1992 to 2012. From 2001 to 2010, he also served as assistant director in the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department at the IMF. At CIGI, James’s research focuses on the evolution of Canada’s role in international governance since the 1940s and the potential for further evolution in the near future.

Kevin Carmichael is a CIGI senior fellow and a national business columnist for The Financial Post. Kevin began his career in journalism reporting with The Canadian Press between 1998 and 2000. He worked at Bloomberg News, first in Ottawa and then in Washington, DC, between 2000 and 2005. While at Bloomberg, he covered the Bank of Canada, the US Treasury and also visited several countries as a member of the Treasury’s press pool. Kevin joined The Globe and Mail in 2008 as the national business correspondent.

Paul Jenkins

Distinguished Fellow

Paul Jenkins is a CIGI Distinguished Fellow in the Global Economy program. He provides strategic advice to the Global Economy program, including activities related to CIGI’s partnership with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) and broader macroeconomic issues. His own research focuses on international policy coordination and financial stability, with a particular interest in the G20. From 2003 to 2010, he served as senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada.

Malcolm D. Knight is a CIGI Distinguished Fellow. He is also deputy chair of the board of directors of Payments Canada, visiting professor of finance at the London School of Economics and a director of the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services.

R. Andreas Kraemer is a senior fellow within CIGI’s Global Economy program.  Andreas has informed key think-tanks, policy institutes and regulatory bodies on natural resource, climate and energy policy.

CIGI Senior Fellow Gregory Makoff is currently researching issues in international financial policy, including the management of sovereign debt crises. As an expert in sovereign debt and an experienced debt capital markets professional, Mr. Makoff’s transaction advisory experience will inform his work with CIGI on sovereign debt.

Bessma Momani

Bessma Momani

CIGI Senior Fellow

Bessma Momani is a senior fellow, joining CIGI in 2004. She has a Ph.D. in political science with a focus on international political economy, and is professor at the Balsillie School of International Affairs and the University of Waterloo. She is a 2015 fellow of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Doha Center and a Fulbright Scholar.

Susan Schadler

CIGI Senior Fellow

Susan Schadler is a CIGI Senior Fellow. She is a former deputy director of the International Monetary Fund’s European Department, where she led surveillance and lending operations to several countries and managed a number of research teams working on European issues. Her current research interests include the sovereign debt crisis, global capital flows, global financial institutions and growth models for emerging market economies.
