Bio

Stephen Clare is a senior research associate with CIGI’s Global AI Risks Initiative. In collaboration with partners from governments, research institutes and multilateral organizations, he works to support the development of effective international institutions to manage global risks from advanced artificial intelligence systems.

Stephen was previously a research fellow at the Forethought Foundation for Global Priorities Research. His research there focused on the probability and severity of future conflict risks, as well as on how tensions between great-power countries may make the development of new technologies more dangerous. He has also worked as an applied researcher at Founders Pledge, an organization that advises philanthropists on impactful giving, and as a program analyst at the United Nations Development Programme in Rwanda. He has written about major conflict risks for the career advice organization 80,000 Hours.

He has an M.Sc. in renewable resources from McGill University, a B.A.S. from McMaster University’s Arts & Science Program and a graduate diploma in economics from Birkbeck, University of London.
