Toward a New Global Deal

The Right Honourable Paul Martin

The Right Honourable Paul Martin gave a keynote address at CIGI'09: Towards a Global New Deal. Mr. Martin spoke about the G20 as the world's new steering committee and the measure by which it should be judged over time. He focused on three issues, global poverty, climate change and the need for an international monitoring and regulation of major financial institutions.

Imagination, Imagination to the Rescue

Roberto Mangaberia Unger, Roscoe Pound Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, gave a keynote address at CIGI’09. He spoke about the global financial and economic crisis, arguing that it offered an opportunity to overthrow “a dictatorship of no alternatives,” but that this opportunity has been largely squandered. Unger called for a debate, built on ideas and imagination, which will bring a liberation from conformity and alter the course of globalization.
