Unleashing the Nuclear Watchdog:
CIGI special report on IAEA

Publicly launched in Vienna on June 13, 2012, Unleashing the Nuclear Watchdog: Strengthening and Reform of the IAEA is a new CIGI publication by Senior Fellow Trevor Findlay. It examines all aspects of the International Atomic Energy Agency's mandate and operations, making multiple recommendations for strengthening and reform of an essential global governance instrument. As the last CIGI Signature Lecture of the season, Professor Findlay will present his research findings at the CIGI Auditorium in Waterloo on June 21.

CIGI offers Perspectives on Los Cabos
G20 Leaders Summit, June 17-18

G20 leaders should admit their failure to deliver on key commitments of past summits and take the opportunity to recover lost ground at next week's G20 Leaders' Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. Those were among the findings of CIGI researchers in Perspectives on the G20: The Los Cabos Summit and Beyond. The commentary series features insights from 12 CIGI experts on the five priorities of the Mexican Presidency of the G20, as well as on the G20's process, effectiveness and future objectives.

An Unfinished House: Report on gaps in international governance

The conference report from An Unfinished House - Filling the Gaps in International Governance will be published this week. Written by CIGI Senior Publications Adviser Max Brem, with the assistance of G20 Project Officer Deanne Leifso, the report chronicles key insights from the conference's five thematic sessions, as well as policy recommendations made in the closing session. Also included in the report are highlights from the opening public panel, with former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo.

UN Peacekeeping: 20 years of reform

Distinguished Fellow Louise Fréchette's new CIGI Paper offers a deep assessment of the United Nations' most visible raison d'être. The paper says that UN peacekeeping has been the object of numerous reforms over the last two decades, giving the UN a much-needed professional capacity to command, control and manage increasingly complex missions.

Intellectual Property Rights and Trade

Former CIGI Distinguished Fellow John M. Curtis has published the third installment in the CIGI Papers series, which focuses on the changing dynamics of intellectual property as relates to international trade. The paper explores the rapidly evolving global supply chain amid the emergence of "trade in tasks," and looks at the legislative and judicial aspects of global dispute settlement.

Indicators for post-2015 development goals

In 2015, the UN will find itself in an unenviable position. What will become of the Millennium Development Goals? Part of CIGI's global development program, Senior Fellow Barry Carin and Research Assistant Nicole Bates-Eamer's new conference report offers insight on 12 possible post-2015 MDGs. An important recommendation is that practical measures will be needed for the success of future goals.

Can diplomatic perks hurt peace processes?

The Africa Initiative's third discussion paper examines the influence that diplomatic perks can have on peace processes. Thomas Kwasi Tieku assesses two experiences - the Burundian and the Inter-Sudanese peace talks - and his findings show that generous incentives can have unintentional affects on the duration of diplomatic gatherings.

National identity in news coverage

CIGI and the Canadian International Council Waterloo Region Branch co-hosted their annual media panel on May 30, under the title Bordered Biases: National Identity in World News Coverage. Panellists included moderator Steve Paikin (TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin); Mitch Potter (Washington bureau chief, The Toronto Star); Kevin Carmichael (Washington correspondent, The Global and Mail and Report on Business); Tony Burman (professor at Ryerson University's School of Journalism and former head of Al Jazeera English and CBC News); and Diana Swain (senior investigative correspondent, CBC News).

Rohinton Medhora appointed 
President of CIGI

CIGI is pleased to announce the appointment of Rohinton Medhora as CIGI's President. Rohinton joined CIGI as president in May after having served on CIGI's International Board of Governors since 2009. He is former vice president of programs at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).


Fen Hampson to lead
Global Security Program

CIGI is pleased to announce the appointment of Fen Hampson as a Distinguished Fellow and the Director of the Global Security Program effective July 1.


Arif Lalani joins CIGI
Operating Board

CIGI is pleased to announce the addition of Arif Lalani to CIGI's Operating Board of Directors. Mr. Lalani is Director-General for Strategic Policy at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT).


CIGI, INET and Mercator co-host Berlin conference

CIGI, The Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change co-hosted hosted its INET's third annual plenary conference in Berlin from April 12-15, Entitled "Paradigm Lost: Rethinking Economics and Politics," in Berlin. The event brought together 200 leading economist, policy makers and scholars.


CIGI co-sponsors conference
on Financial Stability Board

CIGI, with the Bank of Mexico and the Bank of Canada, co-sponsored a conference on the strengthening of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), in Mexico City April 12-13. The Governor of the Bank of Mexico, Agustin Carstens, the Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney, and other officials contributed to the discussion.


CIGI Signature Lecture explores human security's global importance

On May 24, Canada's former minister of foreign affairs, the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, addressed a sold out audience at the CIGI Auditorium on the concept of human security and the responsibility to protect.


CIGI to co-host event on media's role in Arab Spring

A June 14 lecture at the CIGI Campus will focus on media in the Arab Spring. Beirut-based journalist, filmmaker and media analyst Habib Battah will explore recent developments in transnational Arab media and broadcasting.
