Waterloo, Ontario – June 23, 2014 – The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) invites media to cover its CIGI Global Policy Forum, “Shifting Gear — Reshaping the G20 and Addressing the Global Growth Challenge,” on July 2, 2014, at the Rideau Club in Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. Heather Smith, Deputy Secretary, G20 Sherpa in Australia’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, will deliver a keynote address on the challenges Australia faces in chairing the G20 during a period of post-crisis consolidation.
Having proven its worth in its response to the global financial crisis, the G20 is now shifting its focus to driving sustained global economic growth. Dr. Smith will speak on how the Australian presidency is working with members to promote growth, build resilience in the global economy and build a durable international order to underpin global prosperity in the twenty-first century. The 2014 G20 leaders’ summit will be November 15-16, 2014, in Brisbane, Australia.
Dr. Heather Smith was appointed Deputy Secretary, G20 Sherpa in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in September 2013. Prior to this, Dr. Smith had responsibility in the department for economic, industry, infrastructure, environment and strategic policy matters in her role as Deputy Secretary, Economic and Strategy when she joined in May 2013.
Dr. Smith was previously Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with responsibility for the Americas and Africa, North Asia, international security issues, G20 and the international economy, and information technology issues. Dr. Smith has also held positions at the Australian Treasury as General Manager, G20 and APEC Secretariat and General Manager, International Economy Division.
The CIGI Global Policy Forum is an invitation-only series of talks offering authoritative analysis on policy-relevant issues affecting Canada and its place in the world. About the Speaker:

Before joining the Australian public service, Dr. Smith was an academic working on North Asia at the Australian National University, holding various positions from 1994-2000. She also worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia from 1988-1990. Dr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours) from the University of Queensland and a Masters and PhD in Economics from the Australian National University.
