Foreign policy may not determine the next federal election, but observers say the Conservative Party will step up their efforts to portray Prime Minister Stephen Harper as a statesman with international stature in an effort to diminish his political opponents in the emerging campaign.

"I think the Conservatives see foreign policy as a key way to rebuild the prime minister’s brand, and use that to transition to momentum for the party and Stephen Harper as we get closer to an election," Nik Nanos, president of Nanos Research, told Embassy.

"The brand-repair strategy right now is fundamentally built around foreign policy."
