Foreign policy is merely domestic policy with its hat on. If former prime minister Lester Pearson could be almost sure that was true when he first said it decades ago, Stephen Harper is certain of it today.

What a more-ethnic-than-ever Canada says and does abroad now hits home with such force that the first skirmishes of the next federal election are being fought simultaneously offshore in Lebanon and in protest marches across the country. As much as that trivializes the death and destruction of this Middle East crisis, it's a political reality that won't be ignored.
