TORONTO - For years, Jim Balsillie has talked to audiences about the technical and economic challenges behind building the BlackBerry wireless platform.

The chairman and co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion Ltd. delivered a familiar story to a business crowd Monday night, dipping into his techno jargon about enterprise applications partners, IP backhauls, email payloads and digital cellular technology.

Then, half way through his 25-minute speech, he stepped out of the world of wireless data and into international politics, issuing a call to action for Canadians to get involved in the world beyond their borders.
