On Wednesday, Lloyd Axworthy will speak in Waterloo on the seventh anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty to ban anti-personnel landmines, which came into force March 1, 1999.

The purpose of the former foreign minister's visit is to raise funds for the global Adopt A Minefield campaign that works to clear mines from the killing fields that still exist in more than 80 countries. His message will be a rare message of hope rather than despair -- more than 40 million mines have been cleared and hundreds of thousands of lives saved since he called for the international community to come …
