A top-ranking diplomat at Foreign Affairs will replace a political appointee as Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations in New York. John McNee, a 27-year veteran of the department, has served an array of posts in Tel Aviv, Syria, Lebanon, London, Madrid and most recently as ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, a post which he's held since Sept. 2004. He was a part of Pierre Trudeau's Task Force on International Peace and Security, and from 2001 to 2004 was Assistant Deputy Minister of the Africa and Middle East division of Foreign Affairs Canada.
