Now, and in the future, when Canadians think of physics they will probably think of Waterloo Region and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

In existence for only 11 years, the institute has already established a remarkable reputation as a centre for seeking answers to complex questions about the fundamental nature of the universe.

The institute exists because of the generosity of Mike Lazaridis, co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion. Lazaridis started the institute by providing a phenomenal donation of $100 million. Even so, the institute started small, with a staff of about a dozen researchers who had offices …
