University donors want voice heard

If a private donor wants to give money to a university but he or she has no voice, they will keep their money and “run for the hills,” says a former university president.

“If I was an industrial leader … I’d say forget it,” Peter MacKinnon, professor emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan told a group of academics at a conference earlier this fall.

“They want to be involved in the conversation … it’s perfectly appropriate for them to have such a role,” MacKinnon said.

MacKinnon said more collaboration between universities and private groups is needed.
