This discussion looks at how journalists elicit “people stories” to tell the news about world-shaking events.  What are the challenges for war correspondents as they interview civilian casualties, refugees or those living in fear amid violent conflict?  How does a reporter explain the global financial crisis by interviewing Occupy or Euro-zone protesters, or climate change by interviewing drought-stricken farmers?  What are the issues in translation, in finding representative voices while presenting a fair balance of opinion, in witnessing hardship without being able to help, or in staying safe at the front lines of news?

To explore these questions, CIGI and Canadian International Council (CIC) Waterloo Region Branch are proud to present the sixth annual media panel, “Caught in the Headlines: Everyday Voices in World News”  moderated by TVO’s Steve Paikin. Panelists include Stewart Bell (Senior Reporter, National Post), Laura Lynch (Reporter, World Report, CBC), Doug Saunders (International-Affairs Columnist, The Globe and Mail), and Greg Mercer (Journalist, Waterloo Region Record).
