CIGI Speaker Series

The CIGI Speaker Series is a virtual forum designed to deepen connections within the CIGI community and foster intellectual exchange across disciplines. Open to staff, CIGI fellows and Digital Policy Hub fellows, the series highlights emerging research and fresh perspectives from both internal and external guest speakers.

Focusing on a diverse range of cross-cutting topics at the intersection of technology and governance, the series provides a space to explore critical questions, share knowledge and spark collaboration on some of today’s most pressing policy challenges.

A US-China Grand Bargain?

In this talk, leading trade scholar Henry Gao examines the roots of the US-China trade war and the structural imbalances that drive it. Drawing comparisons with the historical trajectories of other East Asian economies, he explores the theoretical appeal and key elements of a potential US-China grand bargain. However, he argues that such a deal is unlikely given the inherent limits of the political systems on both sides. He concludes by outlining what the world should expect — and prepare for — in the absence of meaningful resolution.
