CIA-directed drone strikes against targets in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan have attracted considerable critical attention, but much of the discussion has focused on the 'bureaucratization' of targeted killing and the rules and protocols followed in Washington.  This has artfully diverted attention from what happens in Waziristan.  In this talk, Dr. Derek Gregory discusses what kinds of space the FATA have been made to be for these strikes to be possible.  These considerations raise a series of questions about legal geographies that are not confined to the legality of American interventions outside a war zone (the usual focus of criticism).
