Speaker Bio
JORGE NEF (PhD): Professor of Rural Extension Studies, International Development, and Political Studies at the University of Guelph; Professor of Political Science and Director of the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean (ISLAC), University of South Florida; and also Director of the School of Government and Public Administration of the University of Chile. He has field experience in Latin America and the Pacific and a visiting professor and researcher in universities in Canada, the US, Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico and Papua New Guinea. His areas of research and interest are Human Security, Food and Health Security, Political Economy, Inter American Relations, Global Studies, Higher Education, Public Administration/ Management & Public Policy, Research Methodology and Epistemology. He has written, or edited over a dozen academic books and monographs and over one hundred articles in refereed international journals and books. Currently he is the President (2007-2008) of the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID); past President of the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS). He is the recipient of many teaching awards and recognitions throughout his career (like the lifetime OCUFA Award for Teaching Excellence, twice awarded the UGFA Teaching Award). In recognition of his academic achievements and his service to humanity he was elected Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science. He has done international consultancies for the IDRC, CIDA, and the Pan American Health Organization, and has been an Expert Witness for the Canadian Senate, as well as a member of “Team Canada” in a Prime Ministerial mission to Chile; and early member of the Club of Guelph. He has been and continues to be an organizer of International conferences and symposia, and has been a frequent guest in newspapers, television and radio in numerous countries. He is also an internationally-recognized poet; having published one book of poems, two CDs, while numerous of his works have appeared in international anthologies.
