The Institute for New Economic Thinking’s Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) will host a Ph.D. student workshop in Toronto from April 8-9, 2014, prior to the Institute’s annual plenary conference in Toronto from April 10-12, 2014, which is sponsored by CIGI.
The workshop will be held at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. It will consist of mini-courses covering topics and methods that are overlooked in the conventional economics curriculum. It also will feature student presentation sessions, which give Ph.D. candidates the opportunity to present and discuss their research in a collaborative environment.
Mini Courses
The Institute for New Economic Thinking and CIGI will offer three mini-courses, of which participants will be able to choose one.
Debt and External Adjustment in the Interwar Period: Comparing the Past and the Present
Thomas Ferguson, Institute for New Economic Thinking; Peter Temin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Reviews events and policies in the interwar period, compares them to events and policies in recent years, and asks what can be learned from the past to understand the present. Course description.
Economics of Innovation
Mariana Mazzucato, University of Sussex; Tommaso Ciarli, University of Sussex
Provides the tools for understanding and analyzing innovation and industrial change. Course description.
Monetary Macroeconomics
John Smithin, York University; Frederick Zhou, York University
Discusses puzzles in money and finance and presents alternative theories of money and the rate of interest using numerical simulations. Course description.
Young Scholar Presentations
Selected participants will be given the opportunity to present their research, be it a complete dissertation chapter or work in progress, on any topic. Presenting is voluntary. Applicants shall enter the title and abstract in the application form and submit the final version to the Institute no later than March 1, 2014. Presenters will be assigned as respondents to other students’ papers.
Plenary Conference
The Institute for New Economic Thinking and The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) are committed to promoting “new economic thinking” by identifying pervasive flaws in existing economic paradigms, promoting innovative interdisciplinary avenues for research, creating a strong global community for young scholars, and pushing the economics discipline to meaningfully address the vital challenges of the 21st century. Each year, the fruits of these efforts culminate in a high profile conference, which in 2014 will be held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, from April 10-12.
Participants will be able to attend the workshop and will have full access to the plenary conference, offering the opportunity to confer with the more than 350 scholars, policy makers, and journalists who will also be in attendance.
Costs and Stipends
Workshop participation is free for those accepted. The Institute for New Economic Thinking will provide free accommodations within walking distance to the Fields Institute. Participants will share a room with a fellow participant of the same sex. Travel stipends for airfare will be provided for select applicants. Others will be responsible for arranging their own travel.
Application
Applicants should be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in economics or a related field. The selection committee will prioritize Ph.D. candidates, but will accept a small number of qualified master students, postdocs, and assistant professors. The deadline to complete the online application is January 31, 2014, 11:59 PM (EST). Apply here.
Young scholars who received travel stipends and free accommodations in Berlin 2012, Waterloo 2012, and Hong Kong 2013 are not eligible to apply.
