“[We need to] ensure that we have the tools that are necessary to protect ourselves from...new phenomena.”

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino at the Canada’s National Security event

The global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that security threats are ever changing and new threats can appear without warning. For CIGI, it revealed a clear need for Canada to reimagine its approach to national security at home and abroad.

Working directly with Canadian government officials, CIGI’s Aaron Shull and Wesley Wark led a project that convened more than 250 government, academic and private sector experts to generate new thinking on Canada’s national security and identify ways that Canada can influence global policy and rulemaking to better protect future prosperity and enhance domestic security. The result: new governance options and clear recommendations on topics ranging from intelligence, emerging technologies, climate change and ensuring democracy. Marquee events with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien completed the project.
