“[Intellectual Property Canada] is a vitally important organization that will support innovators in their efforts to protect and leverage their intellectual property for economic and social benefit.”

Karima Bawa marking Canada’s new focus on IP

CIGI Senior Fellow Karima Bawa was named as the first chair of the new Intellectual Property Ontario agency created to help researchers and companies maximize the value of their IP and strengthen their capacity to grow and compete in the global market. As part of the project, the province also adopted an extensive online course developed for CIGI by Bawa with Myra Tawfik on how IP can be strategically leveraged to advance business objectives.

This year’s Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) IP Data & Research Conference featured Ruth Okediji as the keynote speaker. She noted that the feats achieved through AI and machine learning are astonishing but that without clear ethical guidelines and principled leadership, their promise could quickly fail. CIGI also hosted a Data Day, allowing researchers to present a behind-the-scenes look at their work.
