Afghanistan: After the International Community Departs

In the opening episode of Inside the Issues, season two, CIGI Senior Fellow and Afghan security expert Mark Sedra paints a grim picture of the prospects for peace in the country following the departure of Canada and, eventually, the international community. A return to civil conflict between a rejuvenated Northern Alliance and the Taliban is the most likely situation post-2014, Sedra says, though there is a slim hope that negotiations between the Karzai government and moderate Taliban could bring longer-term political stability.
