In episode two of season six, CIGI Research Fellow Eric Jardine joins CIGI Senior Fellow and co-host David Welch for a discussion on cyber crime. Jardine discusses the cyber crime continuum. At one end of the continuum, Internet infrastructure is used to launch online attacks, such as DDoS attacks against websites. On the other end of things, users increasingly conduct illegal activity in the online forums and marketplaces of the Dark web. While discussing the large social costs of cyber crime, Jardine also notes that the technology that gives rise to the Dark Web is dual use, providing dissidents in repressive regimes with a tool to circumvent censorship and exercise their right to free expression.
