Bio
Barry Sanders is a senior fellow at CIGI and a leading figure in quantum science and technology, with research spanning quantum sensing, communication, computing and optics. He is scientific director of the University of Calgary’s “Quantum City”, where he leads efforts to build a quantum innovation ecosystem in Canada.
Barry is also an advisor for European Organization for Nuclear Research’s Open Quantum Institute and the quantum computing Google's XPrize, a mentor for Creative Destruction Labs in Toronto and Calgary and co-lead of the Canada-France Centre national de la recherche scientifique International Research Network. He is a member of standards bodies, a member of three editorial boards, and has been chair for numerous conferences.
Prior to 2003, he was a professor and head of physics at Macquarie University and held several distinguished international visiting positions.
He holds two Diplomas, a Ph.D. and a D.Sc. from Imperial College London, fellowships with Optica, the American Physical Society, the UK Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Canada, and the 2022 City of Calgary International Achievement Award.
