Bio

Hong Shen is a systems scientist at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She received her Ph.D. in communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the global internet industry and policy (with an emphasis on China) as well as the social and policy implications of digital platforms and algorithmic systems. Her work has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation, Amazon, Cisco, the Block Center for Technology and Society, and more. She is the recipient of a Google Policy Fellowship.
