Bio

Zaheed Kara is a senior research associate with CIGI’s Global AI Risks Initiative. His work focuses on developing innovative governance solutions to address the most pressing global risks relating to the development of frontier artificial intelligence (AI), including misuse and misalignment. His work aims to develop ways that governments and other organizations in Canada can best contribute to addressing global AI risks, including by appropriately diagnosing and understanding the problem, as well as by researching policy solutions to mitigate the risks of catastrophic outcomes from AI.

Prior to joining CIGI, Zaheed worked as a policy analyst for the Government of Canada. Most recently, he was on the international policy team of Canada’s AI Hub, housed within Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada. Here, he led initiatives on Canada’s bilateral cooperation in AI governance efforts, including ISED’s involvement in the first international AI Safety Summit, and provided support for its multilateral efforts, such as the G7 Hiroshima AI Process.

Zaheed completed his M.A. in international affairs, specializing in global public policy, in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University, and his honours B.A. in political science, specializing in international relations, at McGill University.
