Ian MacGregor is founder, president, CEO and chairman of North West Refining, a 50 percent partner in the North West Redwater Partnership, which is constructing a $25-billion-dollar bitumen refining complex in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. The project will be the world’s first refinery designed from inception to incorporate CO2 capture, storage and utilization as an integral part of the design.

Born in Calgary, Ian is an entrepreneur who likes the technically complex. He likes commercial opportunity that permits growth to world scale. He really likes it when the establishment concludes a promising idea is not possible. These likes have led to the founding, development and growth of a number of substantial businesses, including Enhance Energy Inc., North West Capital Partners, Carraig Ridge Inc., Ambyint and Shackleton Exploration. Ian has been doing this for more than 40 years. He calls it “having fun.”

A collector since childhood, Ian is the founder of The Canadian Museum of Making, an internationally recognized museum with a world-class collection of African metal work and industrial revolution machinery, as well as an extensive collection of early oil field equipment.

Ian received his B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary in 1971.
