Global Commission on Internet Governance begins two-year effort to reform framework

On January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, CIGI and Chatham House announced a new Global Commission on Internet Government (GCIG), a collaborative project led and funded by the two organizations. Commencing its work in May 2014, the Commission will begin a two-year project designed to articulate and advance a strategic vision for the future of Internet governance. Chaired by Carl Bildt, foreign minister of Sweden, the GCIG consists of 29 high-level commissioners from around the world.

CIGI and INET host "Human After All - Innovation, Disruption, Society"

CIGI and The Institute for New Economic Thinking will be hosting the "Human After All" conference, April 10-12 in Toronto. The conference will focus on innovation and its impact on economics and society. Speakers include Andrew Haldane, the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Michael Sandel, John Raulston Saul, Larry Summers, and Nobel laureates Michael Spence, James Heckman, and Joseph Stiglitz. CIGI will be livestreaming the event and posting videos and interviews to the CIGI website.

CIGI co-publishes special report with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute

The special report Facing West, Facing North is the culmination of a year-and-a-half long study, co-directed by CIGI Distinguished Fellow Len Edwards and Australian Strategic Policy Institute Executive Director Peter Jennings. It investigates Canada and Australia's shared interests in strengthening economic prosperity and security cooperation across East Asia.

CIGI International Law Research Program calls for research fellows

Based at the CIGI Campus in Waterloo, the CIGI International Law Research Program (ILRP) is an integrated multi-disciplinary research and teaching program. CIGI invites leading practitioners, professionals, senior researchers, academics, and graduate students to join the ILRP. Applications are being accepted for fellowships, post-doctoral researchers and graduate scholarships.

CIGI paper proposes Sovereign Debt Forum

A new CIGI Paper by Senior Fellows Richard Gitlin and Brett House calls on international policy makers to establish a sovereign debt forum (SDF) to address temporary liquidity problems before they undermine a country's fundamental solvency. In A Blueprint for a Sovereign Debt Forum, the authors write that the SDF would produce "a more efficient and effective resolution of sovereign financial distress to prevent scenarios where deep debt restructuring becomes the inevitable resolution of severe sovereign crises."

 

CIGI to share findings at ISA Convention in Toronto

CIGI will be well represented at the International Studies Association (ISA) Annual Convention in Toronto for 2014. During the four-day event, 13 CIGI staff and fellows and an additional 23 representatives of the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) will take to the microphones at ISA to present their research and participate in panels and roundtables. CIGI will also be hosting a collaborative networking reception with the BSIA for convention attendees.

China expert Hongying Wang appointed CIGI Senior Fellow

CIGI is pleased to announce the appointment of Hongying Wang as Senior Fellow. Hongying is an associate professor of political science at the University of Waterloo. Her areas of research include international political economy and East Asian politics. Hongying joins CIGI's global economy team to investigate the role of China in global economic imbalances and governance.

Expert on Greek debt Miranda Xafa appointed CIGI Senior Fellow

The appointment of Miranda Xafa as Senior Fellow is an exciting addition to the CIGI Global Economy team. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Athens-based advisory firm E.F. Consulting and former Executive Board Member of the International Monetary Fund, Miranda contributes expertise and experience in sovereign debt crises and debt restructuring, specifically in Greece.

John Odell appointed CIGI Senior Fellow to lead project on deadlocks

CIGI's newest senior fellow, John Odell, is an expert in multilateral negotiation and conflict resolution. In addition to his appointment at CIGI, John is professor emeritus of international relations at the University of Southern California. He has served on faculty at Harvard University and worked as a visiting fellow in the office of the US Trade Representative. At CIGI, John will lead a project on negotiating global deadlocks, as in the issue of climate change.

CIGI paper calls for new approach to climate finance

Institutional Arrangements for Climate Finance, a new CIGI Paper by Senior Fellow David Runnalls, Jessica Boyle and Dave Sawyer, calls for national governments to transfer responsibility for climate negotiations from environment to finance, to achieve real progress on climate finance. The authors contend that climate change must be highly relevant to those making major economic decisions, as it is "all about energy policy."

CIGI publishes paper on Canada's role in international financial governance

In an upcoming CIGI Paper, Boxing With Elephants, Senior Fellow James Boughton will examine Canada's role in international financial governance, particularly with the International Monetary Fund. To be published in late March, Boughton's paper will offer thoughts on whether Canada will continue to have the capacity and the will to take leading positions and actions in the face of increasing competition from rapidly growing, emerging-market countries. CIGI Senior Fellow Harold James speaks on central bank cooperation

On March 6, CIGI Senior Fellow Harold James presented his findings from the premiere volume of the CIGI Essays on International Finance, on the role of central banks, to the Global Policy Forum, an ongoing series of invitation-only lectures. The address, delivered to a VIP audience at the Rideau Club in Ottawa, is now publicly viewable as a video on the CIGI website.

US economist Bill Janeway explains what he learned by 'doing capitalism'

In early March, William Janeway visited CIGI to discuss his learnings from "doing capitalism" as a venture capitalist. His address examined the various stages of an economy of innovation - and the successes and the failures that are necessary. He suggested that the trial-and-error approach must be funded by sources not bound strictly by demand for return on investment. Janeway's public lecture yielded a lively question-and-answer period, which is available for viewing on the CIGI website.

Chief of Defence Staff outlines priorities of the Canadian Forces

Chief of Defence Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces General Tom Lawson visited the CIGI Auditorium to discuss four priorities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Lawson stressed that the Forces' top priority is delivering excellence in operations. Watch the CIGI video to see the public lecture and Lawson's replies to audience questions on topics such as the Disaster Assistant Relief Team and post-traumatic stress disorder in the Canadian military.

T.V. Paul discusses "Pakistan - The Warrior State"

T.V. Paul, the James McGill Professor of International Relations at McGill University, visited CIGI to discuss Pakistan as a "Warrior State." Paul explained in his public lecture that Pakistan, ranking 133 out of 144 countries in global competitiveness, is under a "geostrategic curse." He explains this diagnosis and more in the video of this event.

CIGI Senior Fellow Susan Schadler speaks on sovereign debt bailouts

CIGI's Global Policy Forum in Ottawa was recently addressed by Susan Schadler, who joined CIGI as a Senior Fellow in 2011, after an accomplished career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In this presentation, Schadler draws on her experience as the IMF's deputy director of the European department and her research project on the IMF's role in sovereign debt crises to discuss the legacy of the Euro crisis.

CIGI Senior Fellow John Ibbitson examines Harper's foreign policy

Drawing upon research for his 2015 McClelland & Stewart publication Stephen Harper: A Biography, award-winning Canadian journalist and CIGI Senior Fellow John Ibbitson discussed the transformation of Canadian foreign policy under Prime Minister Stephen Harper - a shift Ibbitson calls "the Big Break." The public lecture is now available online as a video.
