“In terms of messaging, it says that we’re finally walking the walk of being a feminist government and having a feminist foreign policy. I think this is a way to claim the moral leadership globally on this issue. It’s clearly a sign that we stand up for human rights. Many people will point out that this is just one case of many issues and so we can’t read that much into it, but the symbolism is clear. It’s played very well for this government and for Canada internationally.”
