News of the attacks in Paris came as Justin Trudeau prepared to fly to the G20 summit in Turkey late Friday, and from there to the APEC summit in the Philippines next week.
The G20 – a gathering of the world’s 20 top economies – will focus on the Syrian refugee crisis, “but events in Paris will likely detract from that and attempts will be made to link issues of the fight against (ISIL) to the Syrian crisis,” said Bessma Momani, a Middle East and security expert with the University of Waterloo.
