The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin takes a journey through the rapidly growing world of the Bitcoin crypto-currency, widely considered to be the first decentralized digital currency. The film follows the stories of entrepreneurs and startups that are helping shape the new financial frontier, looking at the competitive mining market and the various subcultures within the Bitcoin community. The film highlights a variety of characters and opinions as the social and political impact of an open-source digital currency are examined. Will the rise of Bitcoin bring a monetary paradigm shift that will forever change the world?
This film will be followed by a presentation from CIGI Senior Fellow Julie Maupin on the international law dimensions of the use of blockchain (the underlying technology of Bitcoin) in international financial transactions and potential regulatory frameworks.
Julie Maupin is a senior fellow with CIGI’s International Law Research Program (ILRP), effective January 2016. She is also a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany.
