The Global Commission on Internet Governance (GCIG) concluded its meeting in Ottawa with the release of a communiqué supporting the reallocation of the stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to a global multi-stakeholder body.

Finding Common Ground: Challenges and Opportunities in Internet Governance and Internet-related Policy presents a picture of the current digital landscape. As the GCIG discusses a new system of Internet governance, the challenges and opportunities outlined in this book will guide future conversations and decisions.

An international survey by CIGI and Ipsos revealed that 83 percent of respondents believe access to the Internet should be a basic human right. Respondents also supported a multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance over other governing options, such as the UN or their own country’s government.

A CIGI delegation reported live from the G20 Leaders Summit in November, providing a series of reports and perspectives on the outcomes of the Summit and sideline discussions. Papers, commentaries, blogs and interviews are available on the CIGI website.

The CIGI 2014 Survey of Progress in International Economic Governance painted a picture of regression and slow progress, in spite of a strengthened global system. The survey of global economic experts assessed the progress in four dimensions of economic governance and cooperation.

CIGI’s growing repository of resources on the Chinese economy now includes new papers and policy briefs discussing the internationalization of the Renminbi, China’s participation in G20 summitry, and other key economic issues facing China.

CIGI’s International Law Research Program has launched a new blog covering environmental, economic and intellectual property law. This month, Program Director Oonagh Fitzgerald and Senior Fellow David Estrin deliver insightful commentary from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Lima, Peru.

Shadi Hamid, Middle East expert and author of Temptations of Power: Islamists and Illiberal Democracy in a New Middle East, briefed an audience of policy makers and politicians in Ottawa on the future of political Islam and the implications of Islamist movements for policy makers.

CIGI Distinguished Fellow Malcolm Knight presented the findings of his recent CIGI Paper to a high-level audience in Ottawa, as part of the CIGI Global Policy Forum lecture series. His lecture called for changes within the Financial Stability Board and International Monetary Fund to strengthen their cooperation and effectiveness.

“We are all migrants,” said François Crépeau at his lecture on the human rights of migrants. His lecture discussed society’s treatment and misunderstanding of migrants and the rights that migrants hold. Video of Prof. Crépeau’s lecture is available on the CIGI website.

CIGI’s Global Economy, Global Security & Politics, and International Law Research programs have all welcomed new experts to their teams. Ezra Suruma and Jorge Braga de Macedo join the Global Economy program as Distinguished Fellows, along with Diana Tussie, Yu Yongding and Kevin Carmichael who have been appointed as senior fellows, and new CIGI visiting scholar Chiara Oldani. Foreign policy expert Robert McCrae becomes a senior fellow with the Global Security & Politics program and the International Law Research program receives new senior fellows Steven Schwarcz and Armand de Mestral, and research fellow James Hinton. In a series of public events, CIGI examined the legacies of the First World War on the 100th anniversary of its outbreak. November saw a screening of the Canadian film, Passchendaele; a Global Youth Forum, at which high school students met with university faculty to explore the causes of the war; and a Signature Lecture with Professor Edward Linenthal on violence and remembrance, which is now available for viewing online.
