In January, a major tech competition bill passed the Senate judiciary committee in the United States. If enacted into law, Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s American innovation and choice online act would ban large online platforms from giving preference to their own products on their platforms, which is often referred to as “self-preferencing.”

Similar steps have been taken in Europe, where the European Commission stated that such conduct may be considered anti-competitive when engaged in by a dominant digital platform that can leverage its market power to distort competition in the downstream market.
