Space systems, including satellites and space stations, provide critical infrastructure for our global communications and security agencies; however, without necessary governance updates they face serious threats from cyberattacks. CIGI has been involved in global efforts to alter course. In Geneva, CIGI experts including Wesley Wark and Jessica West launched a major essay series to coincide with the meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group on reducing space threats through norms, rules and principles of responsible behaviours. In Ottawa, Space Canada CEO Brian Gallant joined CIGI experts to explore policy solutions for global security.
Cyberthreats are, of course, equally present on terra firma. Aaron Shull’s testimony to the House of Commons defence committee called for tax incentives to ensure that companies deploy the latest security measures to counter cyberattacks.
