“I think it’s a wake-up call for Canadians. You cannot pick up a newspaper in Canada right now or listen to the radio without there being a story front and center on this issue.”
Aaron Shull recounts discoveries of foreign interference to Voice of America
One issue that has dominated the media this year in Canada is interference in its elections by foreign powers, as Aaron Shull told the Voice of America. Calls to address election interference from CIGI experts ranged from Wesley Wark telling The New York Times that Canada should “follow Australia’s lead” and push back “bluntly” against China, to Stephen Maher’s call for a foreign influence registry.
Foreign interference also happens through cyberattacks launched from states including Russia. As Wark and Jessica West wrote, Ukraine is pushing for the definition of aggression in international law to include cyberattacks and for such attacks on civilian targets to be treated as war crimes.
