“No one knows how to build trust in AI or whether efforts to promote trustworthy AI will be effective. Ultimately, this responsibility falls on the developers and deployers of AI and the policy makers who govern AI.”

Susan Ariel Aaronson on the challenges of rapidly evolving AI systems

In the wake of ChatGPT’s launch, CIGI’s experts jumped quickly into the fray. CIGI President Paul Samson, in a collaboration with the Council on Foreign Relations, said that both benefits and harms could be enormous, noting that “no policy areas — not democratic integrity, labour markets, education, market competition, art creation or science — will remain untouched.”

Senior Fellow Elizabeth Renieris said the best hope for keeping pace with the rapid advancement of AI is using — much the way that AI does — the tools we already have. Ensuring the technology doesn’t work against human and societal interests remains a primary concern, as Marie Lamensch found in the case of ChatGPT’s potential for perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes. But, despite fears, Joël Blit wrote in the Toronto Star that we should focus on harnessing AI’s power for the greater good instead of halting its development.
