On May 28, the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD), the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), and the Offices of the Honourable Senator Woo and the Honourable Senator Al Zaibak will host ‘The Future of Middle Powers After the Rupture: Perspectives from Canada and Beyond‘, taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
As Prime Minister Mark Carney stated during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the international rules-based order is undergoing a profound rupture, driven by intensifying great-power competition, weaponized economic interdependence, and rising geopolitical fragmentation. He articulated a new vision for Canada and other middle powers to work collectively to preserve global stability and prevent further erosion of global governance frameworks.
This parliamentary symposium will examine how this vision can be translated into a coherent foreign policy strategy in practice. Convening a select group of parliamentarians, senior officials, ambassadors, and leading foreign policy experts, the event will explore how Canada and other middle powers can balance their national interests and core values while preserving their alliance commitments and strategic autonomy in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
